Greener Lifestyles: Green Homes on the Rise
What do homeowners want? – more eco-friendly homes – and they want them now.
Green homes are on the rise, with LEED-certified properties jumping 19% since 2017.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and it is the most used green-building rating system globally. LEED-certified homes tend to use 20%-30% less energy than traditional homes.
Not only are these green homeowners seeing a reduction in their energy bills – savings up to 60% on average – but they’re also seeing quite the return on their investment.
A study from the University of Texas at Austin and USGBC reported that green homes in the Austin metro area built to LEED standards are worth, on average, $25,000 more in resale value than conventional homes.
Homes built to LEED standards between 2008 and 2016 saw an 8% uptick in value.
