More people are looking to buy sooner than later
For the past few years, the housing market has felt like a waiting game. High mortgage rates, rising home prices and limited inventory have caused many buyers to put their plans on hold. But according to Bank of America’s 2026 Homebuyer Insights Report, the outlook is shifting in favor of buying again.
While affordability remains a challenge, Americans are feeling more optimistic about homeownership than they have in recent years. Here are some takeaways we should all know from these findings.
More Americans believe homeownership is worth it. For the first time since 2023, more people say they’d rather buy a home than rent. In fact, 53% of survey respondents believe buying is the better option, and 90% still consider a home to be a valuable long-term investment. Nearly everyone surveyed also agreed that homeownership provides stability. While today’s market is not perfect, this survey shows buyers are recognizing that waiting may not be the best strategy.
Affordability is still a big hurdle. Optimism doesn’t mean the challenges have disappeared. High home prices, elevated mortgage rates and limited inventory continue to make buying difficult for many families. The good news? Buyers who prepare ahead of time by improving their credit, saving for closing costs, reviewing title and escrow expectations and getting pre-approved will find themselves in a much stronger position when the right home becomes available.
People are tired of waiting. One of the biggest shifts in this year’s survey is that fewer people are waiting for the “perfect” market. While many buyers still hope mortgage rates will come down, the percentage of people delaying a purchase has dropped compared to last year. More buyers are deciding that life events, such as growing families, new jobs or relocating, matter more than trying to perfectly time the market. After all, the reality is that no one can predict exactly when rates or prices will change.
